TV stuff

speight's coast to coast 05

enthuse chief enthusiast john mckenzie was one of the presenters for the 2005 Speight's Coast to Coast that had eight hours of live coverage shown on Sky Sport on Saturday 5 February. He started on the West Coast and ended up presenting the live action from Sumner Beach in Christchurch.

The line up for the 2005 Speight’s Coast to Coast was more exciting than ever with previous winners, the highest number of international entrants and Olympic and World Champions all lining up on the West Coast for a run, bike, and kayak across the South Island.

Richard Ussher from Queenstown won the mens one day event and Kristina Anglem from Christchurch was the first female home in the womans one day. Olympian's and World Champions Ben Fouhy and Jonathan Wyatt stormed home on the second day of the two day teams events with Fouhy passing almost all of the field in the kayak after starting last - Wyatt then recorded the fastest final bike leg time to beat local boys Mike and Graeme Causer who had  led after day one.

It was fair to say John and Steve Gurney (who he worked with for much of the day) did their own media Coast to Coast in one day - John wrote an article for endurance sport about his day out, covering the Speights Coast to Coast in one day hanging out of cars and helicopters and making it to Sumner Beach where upon arriving John was asked by the producer to 'fill in' as much time as he could talking 'live' about the event while they sorted our live images from the helicopter.

With only seconds of notice, 11 minutes later John had covered the event, talking without pausing, and the technical issues were sorted meaning images could be taken from the helicopter once again!
